Casting:
The casting announcements began in March 2011, with Connie Britton being the first to be cast, portraying the female lead character Vivien Harmon Britton saying she took a risk in taking on the role of Vivien. When Murphy introduced him to the role, he said, This is something we've never seen you do before. It will change what you have been doing. She was intrigued by what he presented to her and finally decided to take the role. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, series co-creator Ryan Murphy said that he told Connie Britton earlier that his character Vivien would die in the first season. We really had the entire season charted from the start, he said. In meetings with the main actors, the main characters, Connie, Dylan McDermott and Jessica Lange, while trying to catch them, we were able to say, this is where you start, this is the beginning, and this is how you end.
Denis O'Hare joined the cast in late March as Larry Harvey. Jessica Lange joined the cast in April as Constance, making her first regular role on television. Lange was attracted to the role because it didn't require an episode engagement like a series. That was great for me, she said. I wasn't about to commit to six months. I've been offered series before, and determined not to, because I can't make that kind of commitment for a short time.

Dylan McDermott was cast as the protagonist Ben Harmon in late April. Her character was initially described as a handsome and masculine but sensitive therapist who loves his family but has hurt his wife, McDermott said he wanted to play the role to break his previous role as Bobby Donnell on The Practice series. This was exactly why I wanted to do this series to change and make a different character. People think of me as the guy from The Practice ... I wanted to change that notion in his head and hopefully I'm doing that, "he said.

In May, Taissa Farmiga and Evan Peters were the last actors to be chosen, playing Violet Harmon and Tate Langdon. Farmiga said that she loved Violet immediately and that She had guts for her, she had an attitude. Murphy has described Tate as the true monster of the series, adding: To Evan's big credit and the writers' credit, I think Evan has done an incredibly difficult job of making a cute monster. Zachary Quinto joined the cast in August as Chad, the former owner of the house. Teddy Sears was chosen to play Pat Chad's partner.
